Dr. Seun Sowemimo (“Dr. Seun”), board certified laparoscopic, bariatric and general surgeon, and medical director of Prime Surgicare, is now offering robotic sleeve gastrectomy weight loss surgery using the state-of-the-art da Vinci Robotic Surgery System.
Prime Surgicare is a surgical practice that specializes in treatment for obesity and metabolic disease in addition to laparoscopic and general surgery.
Many of our weight loss surgery operations are performed at CentraState Medical Center, a Bariatric Center of Excellence (COE), achieved as a result of its comprehensive platform of pre- and post-op treatment for people who are very overweight and facing — or potentially facing — obesity-related chronic diseases.
Robot-assisted Gastric Sleeve Now Offered in Monmouth County
Known as robotic vertical sleeve gastrectomy, the operation is performed through five small incisions, no longer than an inch, to remove a portion of the stomach, leaving a narrow tube (“sleeve”) portion behind. This new (smaller) stomach pouch significantly reduces the volume of food consumed, while still allowing the stomach to function normally. Patients commonly lose 60 – 70% of excess weight a year after undergoing this bariatric surgical solution.
Robot-assisted bariatric surgery allows Dr. Seun to complete the procedure similarly to laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, but with the possibility of improved visualization, dexterity and control.
How Robotic Weight Loss Surgery Works
During the surgery, Dr. Seun controls the robotic arms that hold the camera and surgical instruments from a console near the operating table. “One of the major advantages of the robotic system is that I am able to move 360 degrees in all directions, with few limitations,” Dr. Seun explains. “Laparoscopic tools are indisputably superior to traditional surgical methods, but some movements are limited. Adding the robotic arms improves my mobility and performance. Also, robotic surgery offers 3-dimensional (3-D) visualization of the surgical field.”
Dr. Seun adds that robot-assisted bariatric surgery offers patients numerous benefits over open abdominal surgery including:
- Significantly less post-op pain
- Shortened surgery time
- Fewer complications
- Less need for pain medications
- Less scarring
- A shorter hospital stay
- Faster return to normal daily activities
“Using the da Vinci robot adds accuracy and minimizes the size of the incision, among other benefits. It’s another way of helping patients achieve their weight loss goals using less invasive techniques.”
