Getting the right amount of protein daily helps to preserve muscle (lean mass) as you shed body fat.
In addition, protein helps to level off blood sugars and keeps your appetite at bay.
Getting the Right Amount of Protein Following Bariatric Surgery
If you do not eat an adequate amount of protein daily, you may start to lose too much muscle.
Losing muscle mass can slow down metabolism, decrease your strength and affect your ability to meet your weight loss goals.
How much protein is enough?
For most people who have had weight loss surgery, 60-80 grams of protein daily is usually enough. However, individuals who are tall and/or doing significant amounts of physical activity may require more protein. Seeing a dietitian to discuss your individual protein needs is important to your success.
How do I know if I am getting enough protein?
When I see people before surgery, I teach them which foods are the best sources of protein and how to count protein. If you still aren’t sure which foods are high in protein or how much protein is found in certain foods, the chart below can help.
Food
Protein Per Serving
*Check the Nutrition Fact Label as the protein content may vary from brand to brand.
Should I use protein supplements?
If you’re having trouble getting your protein in, using a protein shake or a protein bar may help you reach your daily protein needs. Call our Freehold, NJ office at (732)982-2002 for a list of acceptable shakes and bars, as not all products are best for bariatric patients.
Lastly, do not skip meals. Make sure that each of your meals includes a source of protein and always eat your protein first.
If you’re still struggling to get your protein in, contact the Prime Surgicare office for additional guidance. We are here to help!
