The logistical due diligence is done.
You’ve talked to others who have undergone bariatric surgery, done the research, attended new patient information seminars or webinars and selected your bariatric surgeon. You confirmed your insurance coverage and completed your pre-surgery tests and consultations. Your surgery date has been scheduled and you’ve planned for work, school and family absence.
Congratulations!
Now it’s time to have a cup of tea and contemplate the emotional road ahead as you undertake this life-changing opportunity.
>>> Dr. Sowemimo’s Tips for a Safe and Speedy Recovery After Surgery
Set Realistic Heath and Weight Loss Goals
Let’s be clear from the start: the remarkable results many bariatric patients experience, whether they have the gastric sleeve, gastric bypass or a bariatric revision procedure, after surgery come from months of hard work and dedication. They follow the prescribed plan and abide by it. Our weight loss success stories patients drink plenty of water, work-out and eat the right foods. Weight loss will not happen overnight. It’s going to take time.
Early on, don’t focus on the scale. Rather, focus on a completely new way of taking care of your health. Notice how your body feels after you have recovered from the operation and weight loss begins. Don’t worry about your weight six months from now — just focus on today.
You may hit a temporary weight loss plateau for a few weeks. This is when you will ignore the scale and stick to the plan, even ramp up your exercise.
Get the Support You Deserve
You are going to go through a very positive life change. It will change you and those around you — your significant other, family, friends and even co-workers. Reach out to people you trust and talk about your concerns and fears, but also your hope for the future. Let people know what they can do to help and what you would appreciate if they would not do. Identify people who support your bariatric surgery and let them know you may need to lean on them while you acclimate to your new way of living.
Talk with your primary care provider so he/she can be aware of your upcoming surgery and set up a check-in schedule to monitor your holistic health during the transformation.
Finally, attend our monthly bariatric support group where you will meet people at all phases of weight-loss — some had surgery last week, last month, last year or 10+ years ago! As you can imagine, they have much to share, as will you very soon.
You’re Regaining Your Health, Not Dieting
There will be a point when you achieve your goal weight, but your healthy lifestyle doesn’t come to an end then just because you are no longer overweight.
Bariatric surgery is not a diet. Rather, it’s a jumpstart to an improved quality of life which can safely help alleviate the chronic disease of obesity, reduce or eliminate related medical problems and extend your longevity.
Instead of ‘diet,’ think ‘lifestyle.’
