In May, we introduced you to Michael as he was about to go into the OR to have weight loss surgery. At the time, he weighed 280 pounds and previously suffered a massive heart attack at age 48. In addition, he suffered from diabetes and from sleep apnea, two serious medical conditions often brought on by a treatable disease — obesity.
“I nearly died from the heart attack, which was a real wake-up call for me,” the Iselin resident notes. “I’m still a relatively young guy with a lot of life left to live.”
When his daughter became pregnant with his first granddaughter, he vowed to be around to watch her grow up.
Obesity-Related Medical Conditions Resolved in 12 Weeks
Since his operation, it has been smooth sailing for Michael. Even he was somewhat startled by marked improvements in his health since May:
- 70-pound weight-loss
- A1C glucose (blood sugar) level has plummeted from 9.2 to 6.0 (below 5.7 is considered “non-diabetic/normal”)
- Sleep apnea resolved and quality sleep patterns re-established
Michael’s current weight is 210 pounds and Dr. Seun Sowemimo expects him to be close to goal weight by the end of 2017.
“Based on his dedication and desire to achieve a normal BMI, we have no double he will achieve this and any other goal he sets for himself. For people living with medical issues brought on by excess weight, bariatric surgery can help resolve many of these issues very quickly,” says Dr. Seun. “It can be a truly life-transforming decision for patients who have been unsuccessful losing weight using traditional diet and exercise programs.”
