Sure, you can ignore those harmless cysts (often called ‘lumps and bumps’ by laparoscopic surgeons), but sometimes they grow larger or just get in the way.
These benign cysts or lipomas are most commonly found on the head, neck, shoulders or back region. Most healthcare providers recommend you have them removed to offset the possibility of infection or further growth, necessitating a larger incision to remove them down the line. During a simple office visit, we can survey the growth and remove it during the same visit; in many cases, just using local anesthesia.
A Cautionary Note: if you have any suspicious growth on your skin or body, your first stop should be your personal physician or dermatologist so the growth can be properly diagnosed as benign.
How Did I Get This Cyst?
A cyst is a closed pocket of noncancerous tissue which can develop as the result of an infection, clogged oil gland, or even the use of foreign objects, like an earring. This type of non-cancerous growth may increase in size slowly and does not cause pain unless it becomes infected, inflamed, or ruptured. In this case, it can be drained, but it may also be advisable to have it surgically excised.
