I’m so pleased to have met some of you during office visits here at Prime Surgicare. Now that there is an extra pair of surgical hands available, we’re able to expand our general surgery and laparoscopic cases even faster.
One of the things that many people ignore are those unsightly or uncomfortable cysts, lumps and bumps you may discover on your body. While they make many people understandably nervous, the vast majority are just benign cysts or lipomas (harmless tumors mostly on the head, neck, shoulders, extremities or back region). While they may be harmless, we do recommend removing most of them to avoid further growth or possibility of infection. Some of them may be cancerous and professional evaluation could be life-saving.
During a simple office visit, we can survey the growth and remove it during the same visit; in many cases, just using local anesthesia.
When to Have a Lipoma Surgically Removed
If a lipoma becomes bothersome or causes any of the following symptoms, you may want to have it removed during a simple in-office procedure:
- Pain or tenderness
- Infection or inflammation
- Foul-smelling discharge
- Continual growth
- Hinders movement
How Did I Get This Cyst?
A cyst is a closed pocket of noncancerous tissue which can develop as the result of an infection, clogged oil gland, or even the use of foreign objects, like an earring. This type of non-cancerous growth may increase in size slowly and does not cause pain unless it becomes infected, inflamed, or ruptured. In this case, it can be drained, but it may also be advisable to have it removed surgically.
If Your Lump or Bump is Questionable
In the event we believe your cyst requires further examination, we will refer you to the appropriate specialist for further evaluation (ultrasound or biopsy), just to be on the safe side. Once the specialist has given you the ‘all-clear,’ we’ll move forward to complete your procedure in less than 30 minutes, and send you on your way.
