Bariatric surgery can be a life-changer for young adults who take advantage of the Affordable Care Act
Many young adults ages 22 to 26 who are considerably overweight ─ with a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or more ─ have found themselves facing a difficult “life launch” because they are hindered personally and professionally by obesity.
Affordable Care Act offers young adults the benefit of staying on their parents’ medical insurance plans up to age 26 while they establish careers or complete their educations. Starting this year, they can still enroll in mom or dad’s health plan even if they have an offer of coverage through their employer or school.
For those battling severe obesity, this can open the door to medical coverage for a bariatric weight loss surgery solution and a greatly improved quality of life at a critical point in time.
A recent study found that people undergoing weight-loss surgery as young as 18 experienced a very low rate of post-operative complications. Even for those who have obesity-related medical conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnea, their complication rate was lower than average.
Recently I have performed the Gastric Sleeve bariatric surgery option on a number of NJ teens and young adults with outstanding results. Because we do not change the anatomy like in a gastric bypass or have to install a medical device as in the lap band, the gastric band is a low maintenance procedure that suits young people who may be away from their base for college for instance and cannot do regular doctor visits.
I have several New Patient Information Seminars coming up in the evenings at CentraState Medical Center and Raritan Bay Medical Center. I hope you’ll consider joining me for a presentation about the different kinds of weight loss surgery and if this solution might help set you on a brighter course going forward!
