Joseph McPhee, age 55 and a professional account salesperson at Home Depot battled severe chronic back pain after an injury in 2014. Even after surgery in 2018, his mobility was limited, eventually requiring him to wear a leg brace. Not surprisingly, he slowly added weight over the years due to his chronic condition, sedentary job and normal aging.

On and off for about 10 years, Joseph considered surgical weight loss as an option to lose weight after he surpassed 300 pounds on his 6’1” frame. Even after scheduling bariatric surgery some years back, he cancelled the operation, not convinced it was right for him. But when Home Depot offered a fully-paid surgery program with $0 deductibles and $0 co-pays, he took it as a sign to get his weight back on track.

Putting an end to a 10-year surgery postponement

In September 2023, He met with Dr. Seun Sowemimo, weighing 380 pounds, with worsening back pain and managing high cholesterol and high blood pressure. “I have always received solid medical care and CentraState Medical Center, where Dr. Sowemimo is the head of the Bariatric Surgery program. After our first meeting, I knew this time I would go all the way and commit to the surgery,” Joe recalls.

By April 2024, Joe had completed his gastric sleeve surgery and had lost over 100 pounds, including a 20-pound weight loss before surgery. He no longer requires cholesterol or blood pressure medications.

Joe recently posted this review about working with Dr. Seun and his Prime Surgicare team on Google Reviews:

“My sleeve surgery went perfectly with very little scarring. The staff is like Dr. Seun–very friendly. They are the best doctor’s office I have ever been to. This was the best decision I ever made for myself. I would recommend everyone and anyone to go to them.”

Dr. Sowemimo commends Joe for committing to his health

“We were delighted that Joe committed to taking off the extra weight quickly and safely using bariatric surgery,” Dr. Sowemimo explains. “We treat several people whose extra weight significantly increases their chronic back, hip or knee pain.” Dr. Seun said that Joe’s weight loss will reduce his back pain and help to extend his life span now that his blood pressure and cholesterol are normal.

Transitioning to better health, improved nutrition, smaller clothing

Nutritionally, Joe implemented major improvements in his diet, thanks to working with the Prime Surgicare bariatric dietitians led by Prime Surgicare’s bariatric dietitian partner Lauren Carey, RDN, and her LBS Nutrition team. “I was a huge soda drinker all day long,” Joe notes. “I can’t say I completely stopped drinking it, but my consumption is only a fraction of what it was before weight loss surgery.” Joe notes that his pants size has decreased from a 54 to a 42-44, and his shirt size decreased from a 4XT to a 2X or LV.

Ultimately, Joe plans to lose another 30-40 pounds to reach 220 pounds. With more than 100 pounds off his 6’1” frame, it’s easier and less painful for him to move throughout the store and easily complete his responsibilities at Home Depot.

Finding bariatric support from the Prime Surgicare team

Joe after losing more than 100 pounds in about 6 months (June 2024).

Joe cited his appreciation to the entire Prime Surgicare team who supported him before, during and after his gastric sleeve surgery.

“It’s a real family atmosphere there, which you rarely experience in medical care,” Joe notes. “Dr. Sowemimo is very down-to-earth and doesn’t talk to you like a doctor, he talks to you like a person.”

“Laura, who works in the Freehold office and also had weight loss surgery, was a lifesaver for me, answering all my questions. Jenn was also very patient and helpful. They were both like my personal Support Group and I’m very appreciative to them.” (Due to his work schedule, Joe cannot attend the two monthly Bariatric Support Group meetings.)

When asked for his advice for others considering surgical weight loss, Joe’s answer was quick and direct: “Don’t overthink it and don’t wait—that’s my only regret.”

By Seun Sowemimo, MD, FACS, FASMBS

After weight loss surgery, you embark on a transformative journey to better health. One of the keys to long-term success in maintaining weight loss is finding alternatives to replace mindless eating. Instead of reaching for chips or ice cream, it’s time to explore non-food activities to provide emotional comfort when you feel sad, stressed, lonely, excited, or simply bored. I’ve outlined six food-free activities to consider, helping you stay on track with your health goals:

1. Unleash Your Creativity

Engaging in creative hobbies can be incredibly satisfying. Consider taking up painting, writing, knitting, or rekindling an activity you loved but left behind. Pick up a musical instrument you haven’t touched in years and start playing again.

2. Immerse Yourself in Nature

Spending time in nature is a wonderful way to unwind and find inner peace. Explore local parks or go for a walk at the shore. One of my patients signed up for a birdwatching walking tour series and loves it.

3. Get Moving with Physical Activities

Dr. Seun Sowemimo and his weight loss surgery patients and their kids exercise together.

Regular exercise boosts metabolism, burns calories, and releases endorphins, elevating mood and reducing stress. Whether hiking, dancing, swimming, or practicing yoga, numerous fun physical activities await you!

4. Give Your Brain a Workout

Acquiring new skills can be both challenging and exciting. Consider enrolling in classes or workshops that pique your interest, whether it’s cooking, photography, or learning a new language. The sense of achievement from learning something new can replace the temporary comfort of mindless eating.

5. Live in the Present

Mindfulness and meditation can help manage stress and offset emotional eating triggers. Incorporate daily mindfulness sessions into your routine to develop a deeper sense of self-awareness and emotional resilience.

6. Boost Your Mood Through Volunteering

Giving back to your community can be an incredibly rewarding experience. Volunteer for a cause you’re passionate about, and you’ll make a positive impact and find a sense of purpose and fulfillment. You’ll also meet a whole new community of people.

Your journey to a healthier lifestyle is not just about your physical appearance; it also includes nurturing your emotional and mental well-being. By discovering and embracing food-free activities that are meaningful to you, you’ll not only replace mindless eating but also enrich your life in ways you never thought possible.

The Importance of Professional Development for Bariatric Surgeons: Insights from Dr. Seun Sowemimo

Greetings from the ASMBS Annual Meeting.

As a surgeon dedicated to the care and health transformation of my patients, staying updated with the latest bariatric advancements and techniques is crucial. Professional development ensures I continue to provide the best possible patient care, grounded in the newest and clinically proven research and best practices. This annual meeting, now in its 40th year, is a testament to the ongoing commitment we have as professionals to continual learning and improvement.

One of the sessions I have found particularly valuable is “Bariatric Endoscopy Hands-On Lab.” This intensive, hands-on course is invaluable for refining the skills necessary for complex endoscopic procedures, directly helping to ensure positive patient outcomes. Another highlight is the session on “Enhancing Outcomes Through Support Groups,” which underscores the importance of comprehensive patient support in achieving long-term success after bariatric surgery (check out our long-running in-person and online support group meetings for gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, bariatric revision and lap-band removal warriors)

“The MBS Butterfly Effect: A Patient’s Transformation and the Impact on Multiple Organ Systems” resonates deeply with me.

It highlights how the effects of bariatric surgery extend far beyond weight loss, improving overall health and quality of life.

Sharing and absorbing this knowledge not only enriches my practice but also empowers me to educate my patients and colleagues about the profound benefits of our work.

Enjoying a bit of sunshine with my professional colleague and the star of “MY 600-Lb Life” Dr. Younan Nowzaradan (Dr. Now) at the 2024 ASMBS Seminar.

Attending these sessions and networking with other professionals is a vital part of my commitment to excellence in patient care. It’s about continuously evolving and striving to be the best surgeon I can be for my patients. Professional development isn’t just a requirement; it’s a passion that drives me to make a positive impact on every life I touch.

Thank you for your continued trust and support. I look forward to sharing more insights and advancements with you in the near future. See you back in New Jersey soon!

Cheers,

Dr. Seun Sowemimo
