For many years, gastric bypass surgery has been the most popular type of weight loss surgery in New Jersey. The bariatric surgeon creates a small stomach pouch about the size of an egg and then constructs a “bypass” of some of the small intestine. The smaller stomach pouch restricts the amount of food needed to feel full to about 4 ounces, and the bypass decreases the number of nutrients and calories absorbed.
Gastric bypass also reduces the production of the hormone ghrelin, which reduces hunger and appetite. It also increases the bariatric patient's metabolism allowing them to burn more calories.
Weight loss surgery patients with a gastric bypass can expect to lose an average of 70% of their excess weight in 1 year after bariatric surgery.
Gastric bypass is performed laparoscopically under general anesthesia and usually requires a 2 day hospital stay and about 3 weeks to return to work. Dr. Seun recommends gastric bypass, stressing the profound effect it has on diabetes, sometimes curing the disease. It also has a significant effect on resolving acid reflux or GERD.
