Gastric banding (lap band) is a purely restrictive surgical procedure in which a silicone band is placed around the uppermost part of the stomach. This creates a small stomach pouch above the band. The lap band, which is a medical device, is adjustable and can be periodically tightened or loosened depending on the desired restriction. It does not give a metabolic way of losing weight like the gastric sleeve or gastric bypass.
While the gastric band (lap band) works well for some, other patients ultimately do not achieve their desired weight loss goals or may experience complications.
If this sounds familiar, there are surgical alternatives done through revision bariatric surgery, where the band would be removed and your weight loss procedure would be changed or “revised”.
It doesn’t matter which bariatric surgeon implanted your gastric band or how long you’ve had it. If it’s not supporting your weight loss or is causing medical issues, reach out to our board certified bariatric team who specializes in lap band removal.
Lap band to sleeve gastrectomy revision
Converting from a gastric band to a gastric sleeve allows you to lose as much as 60 percent of the excess weight you carried prior to the band removal. A large amount of the stomach is removed, leaving a smaller sleeve-shaped sack, which limits the amount of food you can consume. Although you will eat much less, your digestive process remains normal.
Gastric band to gastric bypass conversion
People who change from the lap band to a gastric bypass can lose more excess weight -- up to 70 percent -- than the sleeve. This weight loss surgery divides the stomach and creates a small pouch. You will only consume small amounts of food in order to achieve satiety (feeling full).
If you’re frustrated by your weight loss progress after lap band surgery, don’t give up. There are other options available. Every patient’s case is unique and requires a one-on-one consultation with our experienced bariatric surgeons who have performed thousands of bariatric operations here in central New Jersey.
