A new study released by the University of California San Diego School of Medicine found that despite equal rates of obesity among American men and women, 80% of patients who undergo bariatric surgery are female.
The report found that slightly more men seek bariatric surgery as they age due mainly to the fact that once men get older, obesity-related diseases−diabetes, heart disease, cholesterol issues, cancer — may be contributing factors.
Dr. Sowemimo Specializes in Bariatric Surgery for Men
At Prime Surgicare, we treat a significant percentage of men, from ages 18 to 65, who go on to achieve outstanding outcomes after having gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, lap banding or a revision surgery. And yet, there are still many men here in central New Jersey precariously balancing on the obesity tightrope with BMIs in excess of 35.
One of the key messages we tout is the fact that while weight loss surgery will make you look more attractive, younger and healthier — the key factor in pursuing this surgical weight loss solution is to retain or fend off serious chronic diseases caused by obesity, particularly as you age.
