Truck driver Bill Carney performed his due diligence before choosing the surgeon who would perform his weight loss surgery. “I heard about Dr. Seun from a female friend, so I checked him out online and ended up reading every one of the patient stories on primesurgicare.com,” he recalls.
Having bariatric surgery was not a new concept to Bill — he had seen other friends and colleagues have gastric bypass or gastric sleeve and lose a substantial amount of weight. Weighing 344 pounds and bothered by pre-diabetes, pre-hypertension, borderline high blood pressure and a bad case of sleep apnea, the 34-year-old single man decided it was time for a change and chose board-certified bariatric surgeon, Dr. Seun Sowemimo, to help change his life.
Gastric Sleeve Weight Loss Surgery Sets Bill on a New Path
On January 25, 2017, Bill had the vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) operation in Freehold. “On that day, I was wearing size 46 pants and a 3LX shirt and constantly sweating,” the Jackson resident recalls. “I was 100 percent ready to change my health situation.”
Just two days after surgery, Bill felt well enough to pass on the pain medication. He was off work for two weeks and restricted to light duty for the first month back on the job.
“Listen to the Doctor. It’s That Simple.”
“Since my surgery, I’ve sent five other people to Dr. Sowemimo for the same operation,” Bill says. “I give them one piece of advice: no matter what–do everything the doctor and Lori, the bariatric dietitian, tells you to do.” That’s what helped Bill steadily lose the bulk of his weight within five to six months of his surgery. Since then, his health has changed dramatically:
- 124 pound weight loss
- Clothing size is now 34 pant and size large shirt
- No longer pre-diabetic
- No longer has pre-hypertension
- Normalized blood pressure
- No longer suffers from sleep apnea
- He now weighs 230 pounds, down from 344 pounds
Resolving Sleep Apnea Proves to be a Lifesaver
“For me, the sleep apnea was a serious issue and I don’t mean just the snoring. During a sleep study, they found I stopped breathing 60-90 times an hour,” Bill explains. “Clearly, I had been living and working on virtually no REM sleep.”
Thankfully, the sleep apnea and Bill’s other issues are no longer a problem. “I feel lighter in many ways — physically, of course, but also knowing I’ve kicked all the health issues that were about to become very serious,” Bill notes. “People definitely look at you differently when you are a normal weight. I’d say the future looks very bright for me.”
