The clinical study followed 83 bariatric patients over the age of 60. The results found that they lost an average of 65 percent of their excess weight within 12 months of the operation.
Here at Prime Surgicare, located in Monmouth County, we have also performed the gastric sleeve, gastric bypass and other weight loss surgery operations on patients over age 60 with outstanding results, both in terms of total weight loss and lessening or alleviating obesity co-morbidities, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and chronic joint pain.
Bariatric Surgery Today is Safer than Ever
Not so long ago, many doctors originally viewed age 55 as the cut-off for bariatric surgeries. But surgical techniques have vastly improved. Today, the surgical risk-profile, even for patients over age 60, is about as safe as having your gallbladder removed, in most cases.
Weight Loss Surgery Improves New Jersey Seniors’ Quality of Life
Although achieving improved overall health is the goal for weight loss surgery, the patient’s day-to-day life during the “golden years” is vastly improved as well.
For seniors, losing a significant amount of weight opens the door to:
- Ease of travel
- More energy to keep up with grandchildren
- Less reliance on medication for obesity-related medical issues
- Lowering the risk of serious diseases, including cancer and heart disease
- Reaping the overall mental and physical benefits of being able to exercise
- Less leisure time wasted going to doctor appointments
Sixty-three-year-old James Langan talks about his unexpected cancer discovery and eventual successful weight loss surgery:
