Prime Surgicare’s exclusive Bariatric Success Program is comprised of several components, all supported by experienced members of our weight loss surgery team, who collectively help guide patients through their weight loss journey to goal weight and maintenance.
One simple but powerful tool promotes weight loss, but even more importantly, helps people become more mindful of the health choices and challenges they face every day — a journal.
The journal can be logged on your phone or written in a physical notebook that you keep with you throughout the day. It can be as brief or detailed as you want it to be. It could be jotting down thoughts at the end of your day or recording quick messages to yourself throughout the day.
Personally, we believe taking the extra time to manually write down how you feel, what you eat and how long you exercise ultimately strengthens the overall value of journaling, but the ultimate choice has to feel right for you.
Journal Your Nutrition
Start with a simple practice of writing down the foods you eat for breakfast, lunch, evening snacks, dinner, including the handful of chips you had at 10:30pm last night. Check off how many ounces of water you drink as well. Sharing this detailed information with your bariatric dietitian also helps identify any issues that may be slowing your weight loss progress. If there is no record of your food consumption, it is more difficult to rectify any trouble spots.
It can also help to call out negative behaviors that may be jeopardizing weight loss or weight maintenance.
Tracking your emotional behaviors
Keep track of your emotional health too. Having weight loss surgery is a major life change, so there will be some stress and uncertainly along the way. Take a few minutes to capture your state of mind upon waking up or going to sleep, and how eating a specific food or exercise makes you feel. At the end of the day, finish off your journal with a message of gratitude:
What is one thing I am thankful for today?

Troubleshoot Health Concerns
Keep track of any indicators that seem unusual to you and discuss them with your Prime Surgicare doctors or bariatric nutritionist. (If you suspect there may be a medical issue that needs our attention, call the office to discuss it or schedule a prompt appointment.) Also, track your sleeping habits. Many patients who battle sleep apnea begin to see a pronounced lessening of symptoms during weight loss.
Have Traditional Diet and Exercise Programs Not Worked For You?
For many people, particularly those who are very overweight, standard weight loss programs don’t lead to achieving significant and lasting weight loss. Yo-yo dieting over the years takes a toll on the body and often leads to obesity-related medical problems.
