Americans and the world are going back to work and some play as the coved -19 pandemic continues at different levels in different places. for those of you taking this step back into society and the new normal, here are 5 ways to protect yourself from contracting the virus.

1. maintain a high level of personal hygiene. wash your hands frequently for least 20 seconds

Avoid or minimize contact with surfaces especially metal surfaces where the corona virus can survive for up to 3 days particularly in public places.

practice not touching your face and avoid picking your nose.

If you must pick, wash your hands before and after. Have a hand sanitizer available at your work desk, in your car and carry one  in your bag for regular use.

2. Wear a face mask or covering. This not only protects you but protects others from droplets which are the primary mode of spread of the virus.

Also avoid being in close proximity to people not wearing masks especially if they are talking, singing or shouting.

Wearing of mask by both people is what gives the maximum level of protection to droplet spread. Remember also to be 6 feet away from other people. If youre close enough to smell their breath then youre too close.

3. Avoid crowds in closed spaces. Droplets can be spread further when people are coughing , laughing, shouting or singing. Some of these are aerosolized meaning they can remain floating in the air for up to 3-8 hours especially in closed spaces.

Restaurants and houses of worship are examples of places where this deadly combination of factors can occur.

Remember patient 31 in South Korea responsible for spread to 5,000 people by attending religious services and Bishop Gerald Glenn, a Pastor in Virginia who bragged on keeping his church open for a packed service and was dead from virus within a week.

4. Build up your immunity: Eat more fruits and vegetables and whole grains at this time. these contain numerous antioxidants and anti inflammatory bioactives.

Foods rich in vitamin C such as pineapple, kiwi, guava, grapefruit and cauliflower help build up the immune system.

Also reduce your consumption of animal based foods including milk, eggs, cheese, shrimp, chicken and meat. These have been shown to have pro-inflammatory effects in humans.

5. Plan your workspace from both a physical and a workflow perspective to minimize virus spread. make sure you sit or stand six feet away from coworkers and that there is adequate ventilation. open windows if possible.

Make sure there are physical barriers when talking to people e.g plexiglass, masks, face shields. Minimize physical contact and use PPE, hand sanitizers, gloves and hand washing liberally.

Finally, Stay on your guard and remember that even though the corona virus is subsiding, it has not gone away and we could even see a spike in cases depending on our collective behavior.

Covid-19 is still a disease without a cure but we can protect ourselves give our ourselves the best fighting chance against the disease.

“Today, when obesity has been found to be a major risk factor for contracting COVID-19, Heather’s success story reinforces that weight loss surgery can help avoid the virus and several obesity-related chronic medical conditions.”

Gina Dreizin, RPA-C, Prime Surgicare

“I got tired of my doctor telling me that my blood pressure and cholesterol was too high and that I needed to get the extra weight off,” explains Heather Gallina, a 43-year-old professional employed at a Shore-based brokerage firm.

Heather lost 142 pounds after gastric sleeve surgery

“My whole life, I had gone through the lose weight, gain weight, lose weight, gain weight cycle. I was out of options.”

Heather has also lost a good friend in her 40’s to a heart attack. It was a stark reminder of the risks of obesity.

Trusting bariatric surgeon recommendations from two friends

The Ocean County woman knew a few people who had already had successful bariatric weight loss surgery, performed by the surgeons at Prime Surgicare in Freehold, and she attended an information seminar to learn more in early 2019. (Monthly New Patient seminars are currently being held virtually on the second Wednesday of each month).

At the time, Heather, who is five feet tall, was wearing a 22-24 clothing size.

One year after her successful gastric sleeve surgery, Heather has lost a whopping 142 pounds. She now wears a size 8-10.

She continues to work during the pandemic, but took time out to answer some questions about her resounding sleeve surgery success.

Heather is shown before and after her 142-pound weight loss.

Once you were medically-cleared for surgery, what happened next?

I had the operation and had no complications. I was mentally prepared to do whatever it took to be successful. The Prime Surgicare staff told me what to do to lose the most amount of weight as quickly and safely as possible. I will tell you that I followed their instructions to the letter. They know what they are doing.

Did you exercise before and after weight loss surgery?

Even when I was heavy, I would still exercise in some way. But after sleeve surgery, I was very inspired to step it up, as the doctors and bariatric dietitian Lori told me this would speed up my weight loss by increasing my metabolism.

What is your workout routine today?

Before my gym closed due to COVID, I was lifting light weights and doing cardio five times a week. Now, I walk 45 minutes to an hour 4-5 times a week after work and continue to lift light weights on my own at home.

Prime Surgicare Offers Virtual Office Visits for Bariatric and General Surgery Patients

Can you share some of your personal bariatric tips and tools?

A year after my surgery, I still measure and weigh my food, no matter what. I have the power to manage my portions, which was a big downfall for me before surgery. People don’t know what regular-size portion of food is supposed to be.

I also did away with drinking diet soda. It did all the wrong things for my body and I don’t even miss it now.

I have to add that I will never stop exercising. I am about 25 pounds from my goal weight and I know that working out will help me maintain my weight for the rest of my life.

The Bariatric Success Program Offers Seasonal Group Workouts

How do you handle meal planning during your busy life?

On Sundays, I devote time to preparing my breakfasts and lunches for the week, which I eat at work. I make these tasty egg white muffins for breakfast and pre-pack lean meats with a vegetable for lunch.

I don’t love water, so I add Crystal Light to make it more of a treat. I drink 48-64 ounces daily.

How has your life changed?

First and foremost, I have the obesity monkey off my back. It’s something I’ve carried around my whole life and the freedom I have now not to worry about it is amazing.

Before weight loss surgery, I was hungry morning, noon and night. Since the sleeve gastrectomy, I literally have to set my phone alarm to remind me to eat. My life no longer revolves around my next meal, which is very freeing.

While I welcome the compliments about my weight loss, my reason for having a bariatric operation for purely for my health.

I knew the weight would eventually catch up with me and I had to fight back.

Over 40? You Can Still Lose the Weight

Physician Assistant Gina Dreizin offers insight into Heather’s success

“Heather beautifully illustrates how a decision to take charge of her health by forging a true partnership with Prime Surgicare’s bariatric team helped to transform her health,” says Gina.

Gina states that Heather’s 142-pound weight loss is largely attributed to her adherence to Prime Surgicare’s weight loss surgery guidelines and sheer determination to finally overcome her lifelong battle with weight.

Starting Your Bariatric Weight Loss Journey

We look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to the Prime Surgicare family!

gastric sleeve surgery before and after

Ocean County woman reflects on the past 24 months since her weight loss surgery

“Happy Surgiversary to me!

Special thanks to Prime Surgicare!

Yesterday was two years since I had my gastric sleeve surgery.

I was over 450 lbs at one point. I lost 85 lbs before surgery. The day of my surgery 04/12/18 I weighed 370 lbs. One year ago on 04/12/19 I weighed 255 lbs.

Yesterday, 04/12/20, I weighed 235 lbs.

Bariatric surgery has been a mental and physical journey

I am still not where I want to be yet (my goal is to be 195 lbs or less).

Maybe I could have been more strict or done more but I moved at my pace. I have been really strict and focused at times and off track other times.

But I have been living my life and happy. I have continued losing weight at a much slower pace but I haven’t gained any weight back in these last 2 years.

I have no doubts I will get there. This has been life changing in so many ways.

Some people I thought would always be by my side are no longer there for all different reasons. Some people I rarely spoke to have become my biggest supporters and cheerleaders. I shared my story to help keep myself accountable and in the hopes that I might help someone else.

I never could have imagined how much support I would have gotten from so many people and the amount of people that have reached out to me to say I inspired them to make changes or even have surgery too.”

Kimberly B.

Joan, age 71, chose to have gastric sleeve weight loss surgery after her cardiologist warned she needed to lose the extra weight quickly.

Joan had sucessful bariatric surgery at age 71.

Joan Cloughley of Ocean County, NJ.

“My weight has been a challenge since I had a hysterectomy in my 30’s,” Joan Cloughley, a former corporate responsibility manager for a New York accounting firm, explains. “I joined Weight Watchers about 10 times and always lost and gained the same 50 pounds.”

In her late 60’s, she developed some shortness of breath and felt fatigued most of the day. The retired Manchester resident was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (aFib) or an irregular heartbeat. She underwent an atrial fibrillation ablation procedure that helped to relieve her symptoms.

“My doctor told me the best thing I could do for my health and longevity was to lose the extra weight,” Joan recalls. Dr. Seun Sowemimo was one of the bariatric surgeons her doctor recommended.

Searching for the right bariatric surgeon

“I checked out the websites and reviews of all the doctors and they seemed very good,” she explained, “But when I looked at Dr. Seun’s website, his videos of patients and calming demeanor just resonated with me; I called him for an appointment the same day.

“Joan was very positive and motivated about having weight loss surgery to relieve the pressure on her heart and feel more energetic every day,” Dr. Sowemimo recalls.

“After we discussed her medical history in detail, we agreed that the gastric sleeve procedure would be ideal for her.”

In March 2019, weighing over 300 pounds, Joan had the vertical sleeve gastrectomy and recovered without complications.

Seventy-year-old fights heart disease with weight loss surgery

A year later, she has lost 85 pounds and her clothing size has also been dramatically reduced. Recently, she was stunned to realize she could no longer shop in the plus-size department.

“I was in Macy’s shopping with a friend and tried on some clothing from the large-size department,” Joan explains.

“She took one look at the outfits on me and told me I needed a regular Misses size. That was a great day for me.”

“Joan is one of our older patients, but she has done a tremendous job following the specific nutrition and exercise guidelines we created for her,” says Dr. Seun, a board-certified and fellowship-trained bariatric, laparoscopic and general surgeon.

“She joined our Bariatric Group Fitness training, which is part of the Prime Bariatric Success Program, and consistently worked out several days a week until the COVID-19 shutdown.”

Dr. Seun says her commitment to fitness helps keep the active senior’s metabolism optimized and keep her energy up.

She also walks for two miles regularly, watches TV while using her exercise bike and just ordered a stepper machine for home as well. Joan also attends Prime Surgicare’s monthly Bariatric Support Group meetings at CentraState Medical Center in Freehold.

Joan impresses her cardiologist after bariatric surgery

Senior citizen loses weight after bariatric weight loss surgery

Joan, (left) before gastric sleeve weight loss surgery, weighed 316 pounds. She has lost 85 pounds a year after surgery and continues to lose steadily.

In December 2019, Joan paid a visit to her cardiologist, nine months after her VSG operation.

“My test results were so good, my doctor said he was taking me off his ‘sick list’ and only needed to see me every six months going forward. He was very impressed with the ‘new Joan.’”

Even with her resounding weight loss success, Joan has one regret—

“I just wish I had done this sooner. Weighing so much less allows me to do so much more–from being able to enjoy my nieces and nephews to the fullest to staying out on the dance floor all night.

I am finally comfortable in my own skin.

At 71-years-old, it’s truly a new beginning for me.”
