Adding Dr. Seun’s Weight Loss Plan strategy to her weight loss arsenal creates a passion for plant-based eating

About a year ago, Secaucus educator Traci and her brother from Marlboro had a heart-to-heart about their weight issues during a family gathering. “My brother confided in me that I didn’t look comfortable in my own skin and seemed to have labored breathing,” she recalls. “He said he felt the same way and was ready to deal with his weight issue head-on.”

Her brother had met Dr. Seun Sowemimo at CentraState Medical Center during a previous gallbladder operation, where they informally discussed surgical weight loss. When the siblings were ready to pursue bariatric surgery, Traci made the one-hour drive from Bergen County and they had a conversation with Dr. Seun at his Freehold office.

“After that consultation, we both had 100% confidence that he was the weight loss surgeon to help us,” Traci recalls. “While the drive was far for me, I knew I could recover at my parents’ home in Monmouth County; I was also willing to make the long drive for follow-up appointments.”

Brother and sister attack their weight issue as a team

Within two weeks of each other, Traci and her brother had gastric sleeve bariatric surgery in September 2021. Even before her operation, Traci realized the operation was only a procedure. In order to sustain the weight loss, she had to reframe her relationship with food.

“This surgery was an opportunity to reinvent myself,” the 49-year-old explains. “This surgery does not affect your brain. Therefore, I mentally and emotionally prepared myself to take charge of my relationship with food.”

“Traci and her brother are smart, educated and inspired people,” Dr. Seun notes. “At our first meeting, I had no doubt they would accomplish any goal they set for themselves.” The doctor noted he had several weight loss surgery patients who partnered with a friend, spouse, co-worker or sibling and that a dual weight loss journey can add another layer of support and encouragement during the health and weight loss transformation.

Traci was all business when it came to promoting rapid weight loss. “I committed to following the doctor’s post-op program to the letter from day one,” she notes. “I fully trusted their expertise to help me lose the weight quickly and safely.”

As a result, her efforts paid off X 115.

Traci drops 115 pounds 10 months after gastric sleeve surgery

Another gift of significant weight loss is the new face you see in the mirror every day.

By July 2022, Traci had dropped more than 100 pounds, overhauled her nutrition plan, revamped her relationship with food and started an exercise strategy that she never thought possible—jogging.

“I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I enjoy the challenge of running,” she says with a smile. Today, she typically jogs two to three miles 4-5 times weekly.

“I never thought running would be part of my daily routine, but it’s so good for my mental well-being, I look forward to it.”

Dr. Seun’s Weight Loss Plan fuels a nutrition reboot

“I also started Dr. Seun’s Weight Loss Plan, which is focused on eating a whole food plant-based diet, which was entirely new to me.” Traci frequently watched Dr. Seun’s videos for inspiration and followed the nutrition guidance—Micros over Macros, Calorie Density and Plant-Based Nutrition–to the letter.

Traci says the guidance from his plan has completely transformed her lifestyle. She listed the most important tips she has learned from the program:

  1. “Dilute” all of your food with vegetables—hot or cold. So much bang for your buck!
  2. Download the Baritastic app for comprehensive support, like monitoring protein intake.
  3. Try different sauces and vinegars to food for added flavor (Thai chili is a favorite.)
  4. Add protein-rich beans to your food for bulk and flavor.
  5. Give your body a break from food – stop eating after dinner and eat a late breakfast when possible.
  6. Recognize how much better you feel—mentally and physically—when you don’t eat sugar, empty carbs, processed foods and bread.
  7. Perhaps most importantly, be kind to yourself throughout this journey.  It’s about progress – not perfection.

She also uses an air fryer for cooking all kinds of vegetables, including butternut squash and zucchini.

Sage advice from a gastric sleeve success

Traci says one of the biggest takeaways she has gained from her experience is the importance of making habit changes about the way you see food–even before the weight loss surgery operation. “If people don’t make that commitment beforehand, I don’t know how sustainable the post-op weight loss will be for the long-term.”

As she approaches her one-year bariatric ‘surgiversary’ next month, we asked Traci about her next set of goals. “My health is so different now,” she explains. “I’m no longer pre-diabetic, and the pain in my back, knees and hips is gone.” She doesn’t have any stringent milestones in place other than focusing on being as healthy as possible.

As for Traci’s re-invention goal? Check.

“I spent too many years weighed down by weight.

I’m elated to have a new start as I head into my 50s, and I plan to enjoy every single minute.”

A highlight of every day is when our weight loss surgery patients post on social media to acknowledge important post-bariatric surgery milestones. Not only do these messages help them to recognize the remarkable success of their weight loss efforts, it often inspires friends (and friends of friends) to start their own weight loss journeys, whether they need to lose 10 pounds or 200 pounds.

Meet Joey, a hair stylist in her 20s, who celebrated her one-year “surgiversary” last week:

Joey had successful VSG bariatric surgery performed by bariatrice surgeon Dr. Seun Sowemimo

“Exactly one year ago today I made the best life changing experience life could offer to me! To say I was scared is a understatement, but looking back after a whole year, I couldn’t be more proud of myself! I wouldn’t of been able to do it without my family and loved ones by my side to guide me in the right direction. I feel better then I ever have before and I got a new chance at life.

Cheers to 100 pounds down and happy 1-year surgiversary to the new me!”

It was also great to hear from CJ Weinberger, a married father of two children, this morning:

Man loses 120 pounds after having gastric sleeve weight loss surgery performed by Dr. Sowemimo at CentraState in Freehold, NJ.

“Two years ago today, I had a life-changing surgery. Thank you to my awesome family and friends for all the support and help along the way. I started the journey at 355 pounds and today I weigh 230 lbs. Bariatric surgery is not something to be ashamed of; it’s there for a reason. If you have any questions please ask me I’ll be happy to share it with you. Thank you, Dr. Seun Sowemimo, MD, FACS, FASMBS and Eli Se for everything…”

Healthy Directions Magazine
(CentraState Healthcare System | Atlantic Health System)

The magazine featured Clifford and James Scott in their quarterly publication: https://www.centrastate.com/blog/all-in-the-family-father-and-son-sustain-healthier-lives-after-bariatric-surgery/

Monmouth County Division of Buildings and Grounds Crew Supervisor James Scott Daniels knew the extra weight he was carrying was beginning to take a toll on his health and overall quality of life. “Forty-years-old in this day and age is still pretty young, and I wanted to enjoy as many years ahead as possible,” James recalls.

James, left, and his father, Clifford, before weight loss surgery.

“My Dad had gastric bypass surgery performed by Dr. Sowemimo in 2015,” James explains. “He has maintained his 150-pound weight loss and still weighs less today than in high school.” Several of James’ co-workers and two family members also had successful surgical weight loss performed by Dr. Seun, making his decision even easier.

“I knew my son could be successful,” recalls Clifford Daniels. “I offered my advice and firsthand experience and left the rest up to James.” Today, he follows Dr. Seun’s plant-based nutrition plan which gives him the energy he needs for life and helps him to keep losing weight.

Why bariatric weight loss surgery can be a lifesaver

During James’ pre-surgical testing, he was diagnosed with sleep apnea, a serious sleep disorder when breathing stops and starts during sleep. This condition is also common for people diagnosed with obesity and requires ongoing medical care. He was fitted with a C-Pap device to wear over his face while sleeping.

James asked his father for advice before his bariatric surgery. “He said to believe in God, have faith, remain calm and stay focused on your goal every day after your operation.”

In June 2019, weighing 479 pounds, James underwent gastric sleeve surgery and his road back to health began.

James experiences impressive weight loss milestones

“I knew James had a high probability of losing the extra weight because his father had taken the same journey and did extremely well,” notes Dr. Seun. “At age 39, James was wise to address his weight problem before serious health threats would eventually begin to affect his life.”

By September of 2020, James had made remarkable weight loss progress:

  • 150 pounds lost
  • Pant size – size 56 to 38
  • Shirt size – 7X to XL
  • Sleep apnea – 0 symptoms
  • He can safely wear a vehicle seatbelt

By spring 2022, James had achieved even greater goals:

  • 250 pounds lost (current weight: 231)
  • James received a salary increase when he was promoted to Crew Supervisor and now oversees other employees and 5 county-owned buildings.

“My job requires me to be active and on the move all day long,” James explains. “I am amazed how much less I sweat during simple tasks and I can climb ladders again with no problem.” At 231 pounds, James says he can effortlessly fit into tight spaces and change air filters on the roof without worry.

Exercise and Meal Planning for a 2 pm to 10:30 PM Work Schedule

“Dr. Seun subscribes to a whole food plant-based diet and I try to follow the same nutrition plan,” James, who also drinks green tea daily, says. But working from 2 pm to 10:30 pm is tricky when it comes to meal planning. James breaks down his weekday schedule:

8:00 am           Weight training focusing on upper body

11:00 am         Green tea, Special K cereal

04:00 pm        Protein-focused lunch such as a tuna wrap, large salad, grilled chicken

5:00–8:00 pm  If needed, a protein bar or handful of trail mix snack

11:00 pm         Second weight-based workout with green tea

11:45 pm         Shower and bed

(Keep in mind, James monitors his step count at work and averages 12,000 steps daily).

Looking ahead to goal and weight maintenance

James’ journey from 479 pounds to 231 pounds.

“Even today, people I haven’t seen in a while will pass me without a second look,” says the gastric sleeve success story. “When I explain who I am, they can’t stop staring!”

James is happy to share his weight loss story with others and says it gives his life a sense of purpose to inspire others to regain control of their weight.

Today, James isn’t sure how much more weight he will lose, but his new lifestyle is firmly cemented as a daily practice that allows him to fully enjoy life. He continues to take medication for high blood pressure, but that’s his only chronic health issue,

James says his relationship with Dr. Seun has been one of steadfast positivity. “I feel good after my check-ups, regardless of what the scale says,” James says. “Their bariatric staff presents you with all the tools to be successful and get healthy. The ball is in your court and I hope you run with it.”

By Dr. Seun Sowemimo

On December 16, 2021, I committed to making health and wellness improvements and instilling better habits, challenging my patients to do the same.

Here’s my progress report six months later:

My inspiration was a December Instagram graphic that asked, Where will you be six months from today? As I decorated the Christmas tree, it was hard to look forward to the summer of 2022. From a health and wellness perspective, I decided to take the challenge and see what progress I could make.

Here we are, June 16, 2022, six months later, and I’m sharing my progress. One thing I realized—you can make significant changes in 6 months. I also feel it’s a more manageable timeframe than those New Year’s Resolutions. I’ve outlined my progress–and works still in progress:

Diet & Nutrition

I think the whole world seems to have finally jumped on the whole food plant-based nutrition wagon, and that’s great. It’s so easy now—in two minutes, you can pop on TicTok to find a plant-based recipe for dinner. Equally important, the 16 or 18-hour intermittent fasting practice is also essential to my weight management. It serves my mental and physical health well every day.

I need to try harder to curtail the times I veer off my nutrition course, usually toward meat.

Fitness

I work out in my basement gym during the cold months, but my true joy is getting on my bike and taking a good 30-mile day-long ride. Most of the time, I bike with my friends, but occasionally I go alone to think. Pure fun, pure joy. I can burn well over 2,500 calories with this effort.

I’m not one to sit around; I’ll gather my family and we’ll play basketball together in the driveway, play in the pool or take a long walk around our neighborhood. It’s important for my wife and me to instill the many benefits of sports and fitness into our kids.

Free time to devote to fitness is a luxury for me, so I’m considering reaching out to a personal trainer to help me get to the next fitness level. Losing 40 pounds over the past few years makes working out easier, that’s for certain.

Emotional Health

Stress reduction remains key to my line of work. I turn to music and reading. I really enjoy music while performing surgery. Everyone in the operating room knows our room always gets you bopping to some Afrobeats.

Spiritual Health

In good times and bad, God guides me to a better place. Our church is a place of peace, friendship and community. I continue to be devoted to my faith, as does my family. During the difficult days of Covid and now the constant barrage of troubling events in the world, my faith in God carries me forward.

Intellectual Health

I continue to study Blue Zone populations to understand the lifestyle that supports their remarkable longevity and chronic disease-free lives. I passionately share this information with my patients, particularly those diagnosed with obesity.

A major life goal was achieved in May when I launched my online health course, Dr. Seun’s Weight Loss Plan, to help people worldwide easily and successfully manage their weight, wellness and overall quality of life by adopting four simple nutrition changes.

All in all, I’ll give myself a B for progress over the past six months. I also feel grateful that my overall health continues to be disease-free, thanks to:

  • A micronutrient-rich plant-based diet
  • Focusing on calorie-dense foods so I can eat more and weigh less
  • Intermittent fasting 4-5 days/week from 8 pm until noon the next day (16 hours)
  • Finding fitness activities that I truly enjoy

The Next Six Months

I need to add more fun to my life. I’m still figuring out what that means, but it includes being with my wife, kids, friends and large family. We all work so hard. But we also need to walk away, breathe fresh air, laugh and enjoy the pure simplicity of being alive.

I hope you’ll think back about the past six months and give yourself credit for trying to improve your wellness and health.

I built Prime Surgicare under the premise of helping people become healthier in all aspects of their lives, which promotes a better quality of life.

Thank you for taking the ride with me. The best is yet to come. Cheers.

Grace has gastric sleeve surgery peformed by Dr. Sowemimo in Freehold New Jersey

Dr. Jolita Auguste

(We don’t often share bariatric updates just 6 months after weight loss surgery, but Grace’s message can’t wait. During her bariatric pre-op testing, an undiagnosed heart condition was diagnosed. After this issue was successfully addressed, her gastric sleeve surgery was performed by Dr. Jolita Auguste, board-certified bariatric surgeon at Prime Surgicare. In fact, she has already lost nearly 90 pounds and 3 clothing sizes!

Grace’s Facebook message below is reshared with permission. More to come–We will revisit Grace again in October 2022 for her one year surgiversary.)

“What a learning experience this final journey has been! Why am I always posting on FB to take care of your health regardless of your age? Because I was once you – didn’t care what I ate – didn’t care the scale was going higher – didn’t feel like working out…just didn’t give AF because I wanted to do what I wanted to do……WELP…

After reaching about 267 pounds (my highest weight), and constantly being out of breath, made me realize I needed more help than ever before. Through careful consideration, I had the gastric sleeve in October 2021. By the way, please don’t EVER tell someone who’s had this surgery they “took the easy way out” because that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Having WLS requires psychiatric and other clearances from various physicians, along with multiple tests – which result in a lot of lost time from work. Had I not gone for the required cardiac clearance, I NEVER would’ve found out about my artery blockage and it would not have ended well…

Fast forward 6.5 months and here are my post-op weight loss stats:

🔹 ⬇️ 88.2 lbs (and going)

🔹 Went from size 20 (and pushing) to a comfy size 14

🔹 Gained off-the-charts self-confidence & self esteem

I thank God for all He’s given to me along the way – without His blessings, I would not be where I am today…

My single regret–I wish I would have done it before age 55.”

Grace
