Sabrina Hersom of Jackson lives a frenetic life, like most millennials. As a promoter for a popular live music venue here in central New Jersey, she is fortunate to work in the same field as her personal passion — music and photography.
But as young and healthy as she was, Sabrina’s extra weight was holding her back. We caught up with her last week to find out why she decided to have bariatric surgery, and how her life has changed four months since her procedure.
“My feeling about going through the bariatric surgery process makes me feel grateful, first and foremost! Weight loss surgery isn’t the “easy way out,” by any means. But once I made that decision to become healthier and happier, there was no turning back.
I had the vertical sleeve gastrectomy operation at CentraState Medical Center on June 27, 2016. It went really well with no complications. So far, I’ve lost 70.5 pounds.
With that weight gone, I can walk longer distances, run up and down the stairs, exercise again — and my favorite thing — fit into clothes I thought I’d never wear again!
I went jeans shopping for the first time after surgery; not knowing what to expect, I tried on a size 20 and they were so big! I ended up with a size 16! (The last time I was a size 16 was before I had a bank account to buy them!)
Before surgery, I was approaching a size 26! It was an amazing feeling to be as far away from that size as I am today. I was so happy, I could have jumped and clicked my heels!
This surgery has totally revolutionized my life, and if I needed to do it all over again, I would happily do it in a heartbeat.
I am very thankful to Dr. Seun and the great new friends I have made at the Prime Surgicare Support Group. Without them, I wouldn’t be standing here, as happy as I am.”
