Weight loss success isn’t built during the holidays or after New Year’s resolutions. It’s built during ordinary days when you decide you’re ready for a change.

Most people assume January is the ideal time to focus on weight loss. As a bariatric surgeon, I disagree.
In my experience, summer offers several advantages that can make healthy weight loss feel more natural and sustainable.
Whether you’re considering a medically supervised GLP-1 program, bariatric surgery, or simply looking to regain control of your health, here are five reasons summer may be the perfect time to begin:
1. Summer Provides a Reality Check
Short sleeves, summer photos, vacations and time at the beach often motivate people to take an honest look at their health. While appearance should never be the only goal, recognizing that your weight may be limiting your energy, mobility or confidence can be a powerful catalyst for change.
2. You’re Naturally Less Hungry
When temperatures rise, many people find themselves craving lighter meals rather than heavy comfort foods. Fresh fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and grilled options tend to replace the richer dishes that often dominate colder months.
3. More Daylight Means More Time in Motion

Summer gives us something we can’t create during the winter months: extra daylight. Instead of heading home after work in the dark, you have hours of natural light available for walking, biking, pickleball, gardening or simply spending more time outdoors. Those additional active hours can add up quickly and support meaningful weight loss over time.
4. The Fall Calendar Is Closer Than You Think

Many patients tell me they want to feel healthier before the busy fall and holiday season arrives. Starting now allows you to build momentum before school schedules, football weekends and holiday gatherings begin competing for your attention.
5. Summer Motivation Is Everywhere
Summer tends to bring more vacations, family gatherings, weddings, reunions and social events. When you’re spending more time with others and taking more photos, many people become more motivated to look and feel their best. That added motivation can make it easier to stay consistent with healthy eating, regular exercise and the daily habits that support long-term weight loss success.
Don’t Wait for Weight Loss Until January
If you’ve been considering a GLP-1 weight loss program, bariatric surgery or a consultation about your options, summer is an excellent time to take the first step.
I also welcome appointments from former bariatric surgery patients who have experienced weight regain. Whether you’re interested in GLP-1 medications, nutritional guidance or discussing bariatric revision surgery, there may be effective options available to help you get back on track. Weight regain after bariatric surgery is more common than many people realize, and seeking help early often leads to better long-term results.
